Immigration – Visitor Visa Extensions (Canada)

Extending your stay in Canada is a common and legal process. To succeed, you must understand that you aren’t technically “extending a visa,” but rather applying for a Visitor Record.

Canada Visitor Extension (2026)

  • Document Needed: Visitor Record (Status Document)
  • Application Fee: $100 CAD
  • When to Apply: At least 30 days before the current status expires
  • Processing Method: IRCC Secure Account (Online)
  • Biometrics: Required if not already on file (+$85 CAD)

What Is the Difference Between a Visitor Visa and Visitor Status?

A Visitor Visa (TRV) is strictly an entry document used to travel to a Canadian port of entry. It does not determine how long you can stay.
When you enter, a CBSA officer grants you Status (usually for 6 months). If you wish to stay longer, you must apply for a Visitor Record.

  • Visitor Visa: For entry/re-entry.
  • Visitor Record: For staying inside Canada legally.

How Do I Apply for a Visitor Visa Extension?

Most applicants must apply online via the Official IRCC Portal.

  • 1. Form IMM 5708: Complete the “Application to Change Conditions or Extend My Stay.”
  • 2. Supporting Documents:
  • Digital copy of your Passport (including stamps).
  • Proof of Financial Support (Bank statements or a Sponsorship Letter).
  • Explanation Letter: A clear “Purpose of Stay” (e.g., tourism, visiting family).
  • Pay Fees: The standard fee is $100 CAD.

What Is “Maintained Status” (Formerly Implied Status)?

If you submit your extension application before your current status expires, you can benefit from Maintained Status. This allows you to stay in Canada legally while waiting for IRCC’s decision, even if your initial 6-month period ends during the wait.

New 2026 Biometrics Requirements for Visitor Record Applicants

If you haven’t provided fingerprints in the last 10 years, you must pay the $85 CAD Biometrics Fee. After applying, you will receive a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL) to book an appointment at a Service Canada Centre.

Can I Leave Canada While My Extension Is Processing?

You can leave, but you may lose your maintained status. A Visitor Record does not allow re-entry. To return to Canada, you must still have a valid Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or eTA.

Where Are the IRCC Offices Located for Appointments?

While most applications are processed at the Case Processing Centre in Edmonton, in-person appointments (if required) occur at regional offices:

  • Ontario: Toronto (Etobicoke/Scarborough), Ottawa, Hamilton.
  • Western Canada: Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg.
  • Atlantic: Halifax, Fredericton, St. John’s.

FAQ Canada Visitor Record & Extension

  • Does a Visitor Record allow me to travel?

No. A Visitor Record is for staying in Canada. If you leave, you still need a valid TRV or eTA to re-enter.

  • Can I apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN)?

No. Visitors are not eligible for a SIN. You must first obtain a valid Work Permit.

  • What is the difference between an eTA and a Visitor Record?

An eTA is for boarding a plane to Canada. A Visitor Record is for staying longer once you are already inside.

  • Can I apply for an extension with an expired passport?

No. IRCC will not grant an extension beyond your passport’s expiry date. Renew your passport before applying.

  • What happens if my extension is refused?

Your Maintained Status ends immediately. You must leave Canada or apply for Restoration of Status within 90 days (if eligible).

  • Does my baby need their own extension?

Yes. Every individual, regardless of age, requires their own status document and must pay the standard processing fee.

  • Can I stay in Canada while my extension is being processed?

Yes. Under Maintained Status, you remain a legal resident until IRCC makes a final decision on your file.
